The Ebola virus is in the eye

A US doctor who worked in Sierra Leone was infected with the Ebola virus. Luckily, he recovered successfully, but the virus was detected in his eye, two months after he fully recovered from the bug. His symptoms were: pain and blurred eyesight. According to the experts, this infection is not a treat for the society. A research is needed in order to determine can Ebola virus linger in other parts of the body. When the tests show that a patient no longer have Ebola virus, he is discharged. In that case, there is no danger to the general public.

According to latest announcements, Ebola virus can survive in certain body fluids and parts of the body that acts like reservoirs. A team including Emory University School of Medicine scientists, say that the Ebola virus can survive in the eye and cause further damage. Their patient, 43 years old, had an Ebola infection. After two weeks of treatment he was discharged. Soon after he was out of a hospital, he started complaining of burning eyes and blurry vision. This inflammation could cause blindness. After 3 months of treatment with antiviral drugs and steroids, a patient’s vision improved. Scientists want to pay more attention and perform tests in order to determine is a virus present in the central nervous system, cartilage and testicles.

According to Dr Russell Van Gelder, from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, this is an interesting case that proves that an Ebola virus can sustain in the eye fluids, after a patient is fully recovered from the systemic infection. If this grows into an epidemic, ophthalmologists will see a lot of patients with post-Ebola inflammation.
