Why Does Eyes and Skin of a Person Affected By Jaundice Look Yellow?

There are two kinds of bile pigments – Bilirubin and Biliverdin. Both of them are yellow in colour. They provide colour to the bile salts namely – glycocholate and taurocholate. These two are the by – products of haemoglobin and can be seen in the red blood cells of the body. They undergo the wearing and tearing process of the red blood cells and breaks off to liberate haemoglobin and its derivatives that are then converted to bile pigments by the liver cells. Ultimately, they conjugate with the bile salts.
Bile is responsible for carrying out the digestion process. It reduces the surface tension of the fat molecules and breaks them into fine particles as emulsion of fat. The digestive enzymes for fat then act on it and convert it to fatty acids and lipoproteins. The bile pigments have a certain degree of affinity for the subcutaneous tissue and sclera of eyes. The only thing is that to get them, you should combine it to the lyophillic tissues. They can attach to the water molecules easily. The other bile pigment – lyophobic is insoluble in water. The soluble part gets settled down in the subcutaneous region and sclera i.e. the white portion of eyeball.
When a newborn baby is affected by jaundice, the salts that is present in the skin is converted to a soluble and dissembled product called phototherapy. A person looks yellow owing to colouration and deposit of bilirubin in the layers of skin.
