Turning the wastewater into drinking water

Turning the wastewater into drinking water

Many places in the world use certain purification processes in order to turn wastewater into drinking water. Even when purified, that water isn’t used for tap water. Those facilities, that should make wastewater clean exist in places where there is no enough water and extreme droughts are often.  For example, some states in the United States, like California, have those purifying facilities.

In order to understand how this really works, you must know what the wastewater really is. It isn’t just sewage from residential sources, it is also from industrial! Maybe this will repel you, but that water must pass very strict purification processes. The first process is micro filtration. They must remove the bacteria, protozoa and large solids from the water. Then, that water is forced through a series of filters at very high pressure. This process is called ‘’reverse osmosis’’ and it should eliminate pesticides, salts and other organic chemicals. Some organic chemicals like pharmaceuticals are hit with radiation. It comes from ultra violet lights. After the microfiltration and reverse osmosis, the hydrogen peroxide is used to extract anything left.

When the wastewater is purified it is pumped into the ground and mixed with aquifer water. In some cases, purified water is used as a barrier against ground or sea water. Also, that water trickles down in order to replenish the ground water supply. Only then, it can be used for watering parks and lawns. Maybe this doesn’t sound like something important, but clean water is the most important natural resource, so we must take care of it. Without water, nothing can exist.
